I’ve have recently used 123-reg.co.uk’s domain name registration services to register a domain, and I’m impressed. Both traditional DNS based set up and web forwarding are available, and it is simple to change the settings on the web based control panel.
A domain name means that your website address is www.yourname.co.uk or www.yourname.com assuming someone else hasn’t already registered the name. Your e-mail address(es) will be anythingyouwant@yourname.co.uk.
You get a lot for your money, it costs £7 to register a .co.uk domain name for 2 years. .com names are available for around £20 for the same period.
The big thing for me is the DNS management. This means that i can host my websites on any server i choose and quickly and simply update the DNS options from within the 123 reg control panel.
As with any domain name it takes a few days for the DNS records to update themselves, but it’s not an undue delay, in fact i have been lucky enough to have the records updated within a few hours.123-reg.co.uk makes it very easy to transfer a .co.uk domain name to another company with an IPS tag, for free. You can also specify the primary and secondary DNS servers if you don’t want to use the free forwarding options.
I havent used any off the hosting or web forwarding features as yet but i will update this post if i ever do.
Payment is by the major cards, even Solo is accepted. The site uses a secure server, so from 123-Regs side your details are as secure as they can beSupport is available, both by e-mail and by normal rate telephone call.
All in all, its a good service. That i would recommend and will continue to use

Hi Kerry
123-reg seem to be good when you are setting a site up, but in my experience they can be terrible when it comes to having sites (be that domain names or hosting) expire. An 'autorenew' policy means that they will renew a service and charge you for it unless you specifically request otherwise. I have spent most of today trying to find a way to ensure that I do not pay for domains I no longer need (for myself and/or clients). You can't even remove a card from the account to trip the autorenew process up before it costs you, so I have had to resort to changing the Cardholder Name they hold for me to 'DO NOT USE THIS CARD'. This morning I had to phone a client and tell him 123-reg had used his card to pay for someone else's (unwanted) hosting renewal. I'm leaving 123-reg ASAP, because the hosting and domain name renewal process has cost some people (who have posted their grievances online) a very substantial amount of money. BEWARE.
